NovaTech Configuration Director (NCD)

Straightforward and Consistent Setup and Configuration for All Orion Products

NovaTech Communications Director (NCD) is a Windows®-based configuration software with a practical and straightforward graphical user interface (GUI) that requires no special programming or scripting. Communications are set up in minutes between Orion and IEDs and between Orion and the SCADA master(s).  Configuration of other Orion applications – Math & Logic, Alarm Annunciation, Sequence of Events, Points Blocking, Email, etc – are all set up in the same environment from the same NCD database. Pick Lists (“Default Files’) are available for nearly all substation IEDs, enabling points to be selected by name; IED point address do not need to be known by the user.

In addition to the configuration options, NCD provides a built-in terminal window for the viewing of data values, port communications, device statistics, system events, and system/version information. NCD also supports firmware file and log file transfers via Z-Modem (bi-directional), as well as passthrough to connected relays and meters. This allows the use of the respective manufacturers’ configuration software to access relays and meters, and to retrieve fault records, oscillography, and other non-operational data.

  • Consistent configuration for all Orion models, from the original Orion16, though the Orion5 and Orion5r, to the latest OrionLX and OrionLXm.
  • Used for all configuration tasks, from points selection to Math & Logic. There is no need to leave the NCD environment when creating large complicated configurations.
  • A multiple Orion “Cascaded” configuration can be set up as a single configuration, simplifying points transfer between Orions.
  • 500+ pre-engineered IED points picks lists. Users can also create their own customized IED point picks lists using common spreadsheets.
  • “Relay Helper” auto-discovery program to create points pick lists for new SEL®* relays.
  • No licensing fees with NCD; one copy of NCD is provided on a CD with each shipped Orion Automation Platform. NCD can be set up on a corporate server to be used by multiple users.
  • Connection tools to set up serial and TCP communications to Orions.  Serial, SSH and TCP are all supported.  A terminal emulator is included.
  • Entire configuration saved to a text file that can be viewed with any text editor or spreadsheet.
