Orion WEBserver is a web-based SCADA and local HMI solution that uses open-source web technologies to build interactive screens accessible from standard web browsers. A browser can connect to an Orion and view data from connected IEDs and RTUs. Displays can range from a single text-based screen to detailed substation one-line drawings with multiple password protected drill-down screens for viewing IED data or establishing a pass-through connection with the IED. WEBserver has pre-configured pages for Data Archiving/Sequence of Events Recording, Alarm Annunciation, one-line diagrams, IED faceplates, control screens, alarms, trending, and communications diagnostics.
Page graphics (including active/inactive color states) are created using the no-fee Inkscape .svg page editor. Data points to be monitored and controlled are defined in NovaTech Communications Director (NCD) software (using XML Server protocol), along with logic for object state changes. Pages and interactivity are then transferred from the PC to an Orion and integrated with standard OrionLX pages.
The Sequence of Events (Archive)
Allows you to view binary and analog data changes. The user configures the desired points in the Alarm- Archive-Retentive (AAR) module in the OrionLX offline configuration tool – “NCD”. Binary points are displayed when the value changes state, and analog values are displayed when the values change outside user-defined limits. Values can be archived based on time and/or value change. Both the IED time stamp and the Orion time stamp are provided to simplify identification of incorrectly time-stamped points.
Allows you to view binary and analog data in three alarm states:
In alarm and unacknowledged
In alarm and acknowledged
Returned to normal but unacknowledged
The user configures the desired points in the Alarm-Archive-Retentive (AAR) module in NCD, along with the associated alarm message text to display on the alarm page. Multiple thresholds can be set for analog alarms – Lo, LoLo, Hi and HiHi. Users have the option to acknowledge alarms if their pre-set user privileges permit.
Tools are provided to simplify access and viewing of Alarm and Archive records:
An “Alias” can be defined for any point
Clicking on a heading multiple times will switch between ascending and descending order
A time/date “window can be set to hone in on the desired data
Allows you to view binary and analog data in a graphical format. Any point the user configures in the Archive portion of the AAR module becomes available for trending. Up to eight pens can be graphed at the same time. Archive and Alarm points are stored in non- volatile memory (1GB or 4GB) in an open relational PostgreSQL database. Standard SQL queries or .csv file transfers are alternatives to viewing data in webpages.
NovaTech Orion I/O™ is an extension of the family of OrionLX™ Automation Platforms for substation automation and incorporates the same security features, software tools and “NCD” configuration as the OrionLX. It is a rack-mountable I/O assembly with four slots—A, B, C, and D—that can be filled with any combination of I/O cards: currently 16-Point Discrete Input Card,
NovaTech produces a license-free, lower-cost SCADA solution for electric cooperatives and municipalities.
This document summarizes the key features, the differences between traditional SCADA and WEBserver SCADA, security features, and customer examples.
At DistribuTECH 2017, NovaTech is exhibiting the new Orion I/O™ for substations. It delivers NERC CIP-compliant security, the highest I/O density (up to 64 in 2 RU) and the lowest cost per point (under $20). Orion I/O is a member of the OrionLX™ family, which means the right combination of flexibility and ease-of-use.
Rep. Kevin Yoder (3rd Congressional District of Kansas) presented NovaTech a letter of recognition from and an American flag that flew over the Capitol. This award was in recognition of shipping over 20,000 American manufactured products worldwide.

Almost half of NovaTech’s business is in Systems and Services including web page design, panel design, math and logic development, Orion configuration, and onsite installation and commissioning. Mark Matassa explains how our engineers can work with you to reduce project execution time at the 2016 DistribuTECH Conference and Exhibition in Orlando, Florida.
