Substation-Hardened I/O Overview

Rugged and Flexible I/O for Substations

Distributed-I_O-Header

NovaTech offers three models of substation-hardened input / output modules. All are designed to reliably operate over a wide temperature range (-20ºC to 70ºC) in electrical substations, and to withstand high levels of electrical noise from fast transients, electrostatic discharge and radio frequencies. All operate with common substation battery voltages: 24V dc, 48V dc and 125V dc.  No conversion relays are required.  Discrete inputs and analog transducer inputs are electrically isolated from each other, ensuring compatibility in retrofit applications. All outputs are relay-grade suitable for directly operating switches and energizing breaker trip coils. Discrete inputs quickly sense state changes and are provided with filters for use in 1ms SOE time-stamping applications.

Model Descriptions

diod

High Density I/O

The Bitronics 878 High Density I/O provides up to 56 combinations of digital inputs, digital outputs, and transducer inputs in a compact 3RU package. All I/O is accessible via DNP3 TCP, IEC 61850 or Modbus TCP (copper or fiber), or serial DNP3 or Modbus (RS-232 or RS-485) for substation equipment monitoring. The 878 also includes on-board Boolean Logic.

DDIO

Distributed Discrete I/O (DDIO)

The Orion DDIO is a distributed I/O device with discrete inputs and outputs: 24-in, 16-in / 8-out and 8-in / 16-out.  All I/O is accessible via DNP3 serial (RS-232, RS-485 or ST fiber) or DNP3 TCP (10/100 copper). All configuration is through built-in webpages. Security features include password, firewall and encrypted protocols.  Flexible mounting options include 19” rack mount, panel mount or DIN rail.

DCIO

Distributed Combination I/O (DCIO)

The DCIO is a distributed combination I/O device with eight (8) discrete inputs, eight (8) discrete outputs and eight (8) transducer inputs (selectable per circuit +/-2mA, +/-10V, 4-20mA).

RTU Applications

NovaTech I/O modules are wired to the OrionLX Automation Platform using DNP3 or 61850 to create a flexible RTU assembly.  The OrionLX works with the I/O modules to support SCADA RTU schemes such as TRIP / CLOSE pairs, accumulator freeze / read, and Local / Remote. NovaTech can design and build RTU panels per custom user specification.
