Orion Automation Platform
The Orion Automation Platform enables users to quickly and easily integrate and automate an electric utility substation.
NEW! OrionLX Available
The OrionLX is the next generation of the Orion product family, and is designed for an expanded range of substation automation and cyber-security applications. The OrionLX shares the same 2RU box dimensions and serial communications cards as the Orion5r. Configuration of the OrionLX - including the points read from IEDs, the points presented to SCADA, Math and Logic, and special functions for Sequence of Events, Alarm Annunciation and Distribution Automation - is accomplished using NovaTech Communications Director (NCD), the same license-free tool used to configure other Orion models. Configurations developed to run on the Orion5r can be run on the OrionLX with the modification of a few communication and access parameters.
Flexible Communications Options
The Orions can use a different protocol for up to sixteen ports with any combination of master and slave protocols on RS232, RS485, or fiber-optic media. NovaTech Communications Director (NCD) reduces configuration time with intuitive drop-down menus. Multi-dropped devices are supported when protocols and communication media allow. Each port uses hardware buffers for independent high-speed serial data communications.
Logic and Diagnostics
Internal logic functions of the Orions include over 50 math and text manipulation functions that can be applied to any data point. Logic simulation software is available for offline troubleshooting. Onboard diagnostics allow the user to view port communications, data values, and communication statistics.
Multiple Applications
With the appropriate software and hardware modules (including the Distributed Discrete I/O (DDIO), the Orions can perform the following applications (download the related Orion Application Document from our Documentation Library):
- Smart RTU
- Protective Relay Integration
- Alarm Annunciation
- Sequence of Events (SOE) Recording
- Distribution Automation
The WEBserver allows anyone with a Web Browser to connect to an Orion and view data from connected IEDs and RTUs. WEBserver displays can range from a single text based screen to detailed substation one-line drawings with multiple password protected drill-down screens for viewing IED data or establishing a pass-through connection with the IED.
Distribution Automation Controller
The NovaTech DA-Master is an advanced distribution automation controller that utilizes existing protective devices in single-feeder, multi-feeder, and even multi-substation schemes. When fault data is detected, trip-close commands are issued to isolate and correct abnormal system conditions. The DA-Master is a core technology of the DV2010 (Distribution Vision 2010) initiative headed by We Energies.
Orion Support Website
An Orion Support Site is available for users of the Orion Automation Platform. This site provides a list of Orions purchased, a file transfer section and software support for updating both the NCD configuration program and your Orions with the latest firmware. A user name and password can be provided by our support group in Lenexa, KS. Please call 888.451.1881 and ask for Sales Support. This page requires JAVA Plug-In support. The page will re-direct to sun.java.com to install if it is not detected.
The Auto-Generated ASCII IED Data
Uses a text based display to automatically generate web pages. This feature is an add-on to the NCD configuration software. No html coding is required.
Telnet to Orion (password required)
Allows the user to analyze communication performance and to monitor data values. This feature is password protected. If you would like to try telnet, please email sales@novatech-llc.com with your request.
