ROMOLAND, CA – International Environmental Solutions (IES; wastetopower.com), a pyrolysis gasification system manufacturer, has selected NovaTech as their exclusive automation partner for pending and future projects worldwide. IES Pyrolysis Gasification Systems use a patented zero-oxygen fuel input technology to convert Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) into syngas, a cleanburning hydrocarbon usable for heat and power generation in place of (or in combination with) natural gas. IES technology has been approved for emissions by the California South Coast Air Quality Management District – the most stringent air quality standards in the nation.
Waste-to-Power applications sell power to electric utilities while drastically reducing the transportation costs and pollution incurred in transporting waste streams to farther and fewer landfills. Of the 390 million tons of MSW generated in 2005, 64% (250 million tons) was landfilled. U.S. per capita waste generation continues to rise while diversion rates level off (see chart below), producing strong, sustainable economic demand for Waste-to-Power services. Tipping fees from local haulers and carbon credits generated by the MSW facility provide additional revenue streams.

The NovaTech D/3® Distributed Control System (DCS) will integrate with fuel stream sorting PLCs, control and optimize the pyrolysis gasification reaction to a feedstock of varying moisture and BTU content, and tie into utility substations with the Orion Automation Platform. Documentation and Compliance functions, Energy Management, and other services will form part of a turnkey Waste-to-Power solution.
IES President Karen Bertram notes, “IES chose NovaTech because their process automation and utility integration technologies are a perfect match for our waste-to-power solution. After meeting with NovaTech leadership at this past User Conference, it was further clear that both companies share similar corporate cultures of responsive service, technical innovation and open, clear communications among management.”
“Waste-to-Power is an exciting market segment for NovaTech because IES’ technology is immediately practicable and necessary. Waste-to-power financial incentives are strong and multi-faceted – there’s no other renewable fuel source that people literally pay to get rid of – and the environmental benefits to a world of overflowing landfills are equally impressive. The MSW transportation hub, the utility, and the environment all benefit. It’s a win-win-win,” says NovaTech CEO Volker Oakey.
